Antonio Valencia could make a farewell appearance for Manchester United in their final game of the season against Cardiff on Sunday. The defender, who has been with United since 2009, is out of contract in the summer and is set to leave Old Trafford. He has not played since January 2 due to injury but has been back in training in a bid to prove his fitness.

United, who can finish no higher than fifth in the Premier League, could also inject some youth into their starting line-up. James Garner, Dylan Levitt, Arnau Puigmal, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood all worked with the senior group on Thursday. Jesse Lingard could return from injury but there are doubts over Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial, while Eric Bailly is sidelined with a knee problem.

Cardiff, whose relegation was confirmed last week with defeat against Crystal Palace, will be without on-loan midfielder Harry Arter. Arter has missed the last month with a calf strain, while fellow midfielder Victor Camarasa might miss out after being forced off against Palace with a dead leg. Sol Bamba, Matthew Connolly, Joe Ralls and Callum Paterson are out.

Man United given green light to sign 31-goal midfielder

Manchester United are clear to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon after Manchester City pulled out of the running to sign the forward.

Manchester City were interested in the 31-goal attacking midfielder, who could be available for £50 million this summer. The Sun claims Manchester United’s chances of signing Bruno Fernandes have been massively boosted by their rivals decision to shelve their move for the 24-year-old. Pep Guardiola wants to focus all of the transfer efforts on Atletico Madrid’s Rodri and thinks he can take over from key midfielder Fernandinho.

The Spaniard’s search for a long-term replacement for Fernandinho looks set to end with the signing of Rodri after Pep Guardiola missed out on Jorginho to Chelsea and Fred to Manchester United last year.

Because of the move for Rodri, the Premier League leaders are cooling their interest in the Portuguese, handing the initiative to Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes has a buy-out clause of £86 million in his deal but is expected to go for £50 million if a bidding war for the goalscorer fails to materialise this summer.

The Portugal international has also chipped in with 14 assists and is under deal until 2023. The Red Devils and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are planning a big summer of signings and departures at the club as the 20-times English champions target an overall of the squad.

Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are all being linked with moves away, while United are targeting the likes of young stars Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho.
